Review of Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine

Mockingbird is a heart warming novel from Kathryn Erskine. It follows eleven year old Caitlin who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. Caitlin’s brother Devon was tragically killed in a high school shooting and the novel follows her journey to deal with the aftermath of this.

I knew little about Aspergers before I read this book and I think Erskine touches on the subject very well. Caitlin’s journey to make friends and learn how to understand other people was so moving. The story is told from Caitlin’s point of view and this really helps the reader see things through her eyes.

This is a fantastic book, I will definitely be looking out for more from Kathryn Erskine. I liked the links to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, which will become apparent when you read the book. There are some real tear jerking moments, so have your tissues ready.

The Usborne website has a resource for reading groups online which includes references to To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. To find out more about Kathryn Erskine, Mockingbird and to download some book club notes about the book visit www.usborne.com/mockingbird
