The Horse Road is the tale of a young girl’s love and loyalty to her beautiful horse. The book is set in the year 102BC and Harrison incorporates factual details of the battles that took place alongside her fictional story.

Kallisto is racing her mother’s stallion Gryphon when she spots the advancing Chinese army, who she knows will bring devastation to her community and want to steal their horses. As they desperately try to reach home before the army arrives, Kallisto’s mother and Gryphon are attacked by a leopard. They reach the city in time to get through the gates, but are then stuck inside the city walls whilst it is besieged by the army.

This is a story full of brave characters. Kallisto is a fantastic heroine, she is wise beyond her years and dedicated to her family and horses.

This is a wonderful, vivid story of love and loyalty, the magnificent horses are described so beautifully that they appear right before your eyes. There is a lot of adventure in this book and a few suspenseful moments. It is gripping and fast paced and will keep your attention from beginning to end. The Horse Road was a delight to read and I would highly recommend it, especially for readers looking for a horse story with a difference.
