Review of The Crocodile Who Didn’t Like Water by Gemma Merino
The story begins with a picture of Mummy crocodile, with her lovely red high heeled boots, carrying her basket of eggs, but one egg isn’t the same and that egg becomes the crocodile who didn’t like water. He longed to play with his brothers and sisters at swim club but all he really liked doing was climbing trees. He felt lonely and decided to try the water but he hated it as it was cold and wet and then with a big sneeze he realised he was a dragon and meant to fly not swim.
This is a beautiful story about being yourself and finding what you are good at and is perfect for those children who feel like they don’t fit in. There is a lovely picture at the end of the book with the dragon flying through the air with his crocodile brothers and sisters on his back showing perfectly that even though he is different they all happily accept him for what he is.
The illustrations capture the emotions of the story and there is a clever use of a small colour pallet of mainly greens with red used as a highlight colour and the last picture of a new basket of eggs held by Daddy Dragon suggests there may be a sequel.
