For Little OnesThis area is for our younger Bookbabblers, from baby picture books through to reading for 6 year olds. We want to hear about your little ones 5 favourite books, so send them to us at info@bookbabblers.co.uk, with a line on what they like about them, and we may well feature them here soon. Here, Bookbabbler Wendy shares her children’s favourites with us… It has been very hard to reduce my 2 children’s favourite books down to just 5 and has led to much discussion. My two children are aged 4 and 5 and absolutely adore books and have as a minimum 2 stories a night and have done since they were weeks old. This early story reading has enabled my 5 year old to be way ahead in her reading skills and all the books listed she can read for herself. Our first choice would have to be one by Julia Donaldson who is our absolute favourite author and our top 5 could easily just contain her books! We were really pleased that she has been selected to be children’s laureate. Our pick of hers is.. Tyrannosaurus Drip – Julia Donaldson It is a story about two types of dinosaur the duck-billed dinosaurs who are peace-loving and vegetarian and the T. Rexes who aren’t. By chance a duck-billed dinosaur egg ends up in the T. Rex nest and the grim and grisly mother hatches out a rather drippy little specimen. Tyrannosaurus Drip, as his sisters name him, runs away across the river where he finds a herd of duckbill dinosaurs and when his T Rex family come across the river to eat the duckbills, he saves the day. There is some great repetition in this book that my children love shouting out and they also love this book as we are vegetarian like Tyrannosaurus Drip!! The Silly Slimy Smelly Hairy Book – Babette Cole If you look closely you’ll agree, there are some silly sights to see. This book contains sights that are not only silly, but are slimy, smelly and hairy, too. It illustrates everything from nose hair to hairy ruffs, to smelly skunks and slimy pickled eggs. This is 4 books in one and has been a firm favourite with my two for a couple of years. The illustrations and text never fail to make my children laugh and their Dad loves reading it to them.
Mole thinks the moon is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen, and he wants it. But as Rabbit, Hedgehog and Squirrel remind him, some things are not as close as they look! This is a lovely simple tale with beautiful illustrations that my children adore. They love their Dad reading it to them as he does different silly voices for each of the characters. A Very Proper Fox – Jan Fearnley Frankie, the Fox loves dancing, but Naughty Rabbit says that proper foxes don’t jig about! Proper foxes catch chicken. So he tells Frankie to go and catch a chicken and then he will be a proper fox. He licks his lips, he flexes his claws, he growls like a proper fox, low and mean. ‘I’m coming to get you!’ But instead of a big, fat chicken, Frankie finds a big fat mess that he can’t help tidying, then a fence that needs mending and a garden that needs watering. It is a lovely tale about being true to yourself and being what you want to be. My little boy adores this box and loves repeating the line … he licks his lips… and doing his best fox growl. Aliens Love Underpants – Claire Freedman Aliens love underpants, in every shape and size, But there are no underpants in space, so here’s a big surprise when aliens fly down to earth they don’t want to meet you they simply want your underpants!! This is a great tale with brilliant illustrations that make my kids laugh regardless of the amount of times we have read it! Thanks, Wendy! You can buy each of these books here now.. |
